Our show "Nel segno di Hermes" will continue throughout the entire month of April. Opening hours are Monday to Thursday 10 - 12 am and 4 - 7 pm or in combination with cultural events at the Lyceum Club Internazionale (see poster above). Location is the beautiful Palazzo Giugni in Via Alfani 48 in the center of Florence.
On display are drawings by Simona Dolci, Charles Weed, Per Elof Nilsson Ricklund and myself, along with paintings related to them.
The purpose and context of the exhibition:
Drawing is the expression of an artistic vocabulary that appears in different forms.
It can be initiated by the impression of a moment, a fleeting intuition captured by a quick mark.
It can sometimes be the instrument used to elaborate an idea, the preparation for a much more complex image which then becomes a painting or sculpture.
Drawing is also an art form per se, an autonomous and refined means for exploration, for experiencing and interpreting the real world.
The drawings exhibited in this show are studies for paintings, some of which are on display. In this way, one understands the process of transforming the initial idea into a finished image. Some of the other drawings are works of art in themselves.
Hermes is the messenger of the Gods, he who acts as the liaison between different worlds.
the symbolic meaning of this archetype is in direct relation with our times. The God represents fast movement in space as in thought and this speed is characteristic of our day and age.
Drawing is communication, it is a form of language in competition with other visible expressions. Of all the classical arts, it is the one medium that is the more immediate and direct. At the same time it is profound, mediated, elaborate and made by human hands.
In this context of constant change, a good drawing becomes a means of communication, firm and long lasting.
